TIPS FROM A PROFESSIONAL

The following advice comes from my interview with Pilot John Godwin, who dedicated 38 years to the aviation industry. Throughout his career, he flew a wide range of aircraft, from high-speed fighter jets to large commercial airliners, gaining extensive experience in both military and civilian aviation. His journey began in the Marine Corps, where he trained and served as a military pilot, developing his skills in some of the most intense flying conditions. Later in life, he transitioned into the commercial area, becoming a pilot for Delta Airlines. With decades of firsthand experience in both military and civilian aviation, Godwin offers valuable insight into what it takes to build a successful career as a pilot.

What qualities make a good pilot?

According to Godwin, the key qualities that make a great pilot go beyond just technical skills—they include situational awareness, strong hand-eye coordination, sharp focus, and effective communication skills. Pilots must always be aware of their surroundings, anticipate potential challenges, and make quick, precise decisions under pressure if needed. Coordination and focus are crucial for handling the controls smoothly and responding to unexpected situations. However, one of the most important skills, Godwin emphasizes, is communication. “You never want to be flying with someone who can’t communicate,” he says, stressing that clear and confident communication between pilots, air traffic controllers, and crew members is essential for ensuring a safe and successful flight.

How did being a pilot impact your work-life balance?

One of my biggest concerns about becoming a pilot is figuring out how to balance my personal life with such a demanding career, but Godwin reassured me that it’s not something to stress over too much. He explained that, on average, he flew 15-17 days a month, which left him with plenty of time outside of work to be there with his wife and two kids. What stood out to me was how much control he had over his own schedule—while airlines will schedule you as much as possible, it’s ultimately up to the pilot to set their limits. One of the most valuable pieces of advice he shared was to “always advocate for yourself.” While this applies to many areas of life, it’s especially important in aviation. “If you let them fly you every day, all day—they will,” he explained. Airlines will take advantage of pilots who never say no, so it’s crucial to set boundaries and stand up for yourself when necessary. Learning to manage your schedule and knowing when to step back is key to avoiding burnout and making sure you enjoy both your career and your personal life. Godwin’s words were a great reminder that even in a demanding field like aviation, maintaining balance is possible—it just takes self-awareness and the confidence to speak up.

How competitive is the industry, and how can I stand out?

"The industry is very competitive," Godwin says, but standing out is possible with dedication, discipline, and a strong work ethic. He emphasizes the importance of studying hard in school and always "crossing your T’s and dotting your I’s"—meaning you should pay close attention to details, stay organized, and make sure everything you do is thorough and precise. In aviation, small mistakes can have big consequences, so developing strong habits early on is essential. However, he also reassures that perfection isn’t the goal—what really matters is consistently putting in the effort and always striving to do your best. Whether in school, flight training, or your career, showing that you are hardworking, responsible, and willing to learn will set you apart in such a competitive industry. Additionally, Godwin notes that the Air Force is actively looking to recruit more women pilots. If you’re a hard-working woman with a passion for flying, this is a great opportunity to stand out, as the Air Force values strong, dedicated candidates who are eager to take on challenges.

Do you think becoming a pilot today is a good career choice?

Godwin believes that pursuing a career as a pilot today is an excellent choice, especially for those who are truly passionate about aviation. He explains that while the industry is demanding and competitive, it also offers incredible opportunities, job stability, and the chance to travel the world. However, he emphasizes that this career path isn’t for everyone—it requires genuine interest, dedication, and a willingness to continuously learn and improve. If flying is something you’re truly excited about, then becoming a pilot can be an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling career.
